Read More	HAGERSTOWN MAN DIED IN FALL OFF TV ANTENNA _________ A young man was killed when a television tower on which he was working collapsed near Williamsport Sunday morning. Thomas William Thompson, 29, 321 Radcliffe Ave, was dead on arrival at Washington county Hospital. State police said the fatal accident, the first of its kind in this area, happened at the home of Thompson's father-in-law, Abram Ray Flurie, on the Greencastle Pike just outside of Williamsport. Trooper Thomas Crowther said Thompson was working on the roof of the Flurie house with Francis G Miller. The two men were removing the television antenna from the tower to install it on a big pole which had been erected away from the house. Thompson had climbed up the tower and was in the process of taking the antenna off the tower when the tragic accident occurred. He further said the bolts, which held the base of the tower to the roof, apparently were rusted and broke. At about the same time the guy wires connected from the roof to the tower also broke. There was a moderate wind at the time. Thompson, who was employed by the C & P Telephone Company, was using a safety belt at the time. The belt was fastened from his body around the tower. As the tower plunged to the roof, Thompson was hurled to the front yard of the house, landing on his back, as Miller--still on the roof--looked in horror. Thompson was thrown about 50 feet. Taken to the Washington County Hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr Earl Young. Dr Samuel R Wells, county medical examiner, said death was due to a fractured skull. Thompson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl E Thompson, of Nashville, came here from Tennessee seven years ago after being employed by Southern Bell Telephone Co there. He was a World War II veteran serving with the Marines in the Pacific from 1941 to 1945. Surviving besides his wife and his parents are two children, Thomas N and Sally A, at home; brothers, Carl E Jr and Fred, Nashville; and Donald E, Louisville, Ky; sisters, Betty J and Polly, Nashville; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. E J Thompson of Chattanooga, Tenn. Services will be held at the Leaf Funeral Home, Williamsport on Wednesday at 2 pm, the Rev Dr Berry Plummer officiating. Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. * Daily Mail, Hagerstown, Maryland Monday, February 8, 1954 * Son of: Carl Eugene Thompson Sr and Jeanette H Hamilton. Per a family member: He served in the Marines during WW II from 1941-1945, and was at Guadalcanal.
