One of this number who is deserving of special mention is Thore P. Barke, a successful farmer near Dunbar, Greencastle township, Marshall county, who was born in Norway, April 23, 1850. He is the son of Peter and Ingebor Barke, both natives of Norway. The father spent his life in his native land, dying in 1866. The subject's mother emigrated to America in 1874 and here spent the rest of her life, being now deceased. Their son, Thore P., was reared on a farm and when but a small boy was engaged in the various duties that involves upon a farm lad. He received a good education in the schools of Norway. Believing that because many of his country who had preceded him to the United States had found plenty of opportunities here, he, too, could succeed better in the new Republic of the West, he accordingly set sail for this country in 1871. He penetrated to the interior and lived one year in Benton county, Iowa, then came to Greencastle township, Marshall county, where he secured an eighty-acre farm, which he improved and as he prospered added another eighty, which he has also placed under an excellent state of improvements and now has one of the best farms in the eastern part of the township. He has a neat home and has been very successful as a general farmer and stock raiser, having made it all himself by hard work and the exercise of good judgment. He handles thoroughbred Duroc and Jersey hogs which ﬁnd a very ready market owing to their superior quality. Mr. Barke is a Republican in politics and he takes a great deal of interest in local affairs, desiring to see the best men in ofﬁces of public trust. He and his family are members of the Lutheran church. Mr. Barke was married on January 30, 1881, to Martha Heng, who was born in Norway, and who is the daughter of A.C. Heng, mentioned on another page of this work. Four children, all living, have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Barke, namely: Isabel, Alfred, Benjamin and Mabel.
