Heggem, one of the well known and highly honored citizens of Gilman, Greencastle township, and he has profited immensely by his coming, having by industry and frugality acquired valuable property and laid by a competence for his old age. He is the scion of an excellent family, well known in this county from the pioneer days. His birth occurred in Norway in 1852, and he is the son of Thor and Rachael (Ravnos) Heggem, who came to Marshall county, Iowa, in 1860 and settled in LeGrand township on a farm of forty acres, to which he added until he owned ninety-five acres at the time of his death in 1876. He was a successful farmer and a good citizen. His widow survived until in October, 1889. They were the parents of six children, only two of whom are living, Thor Y. of this review and a daughter. Politically, the elder Heggem was a Republican and he was a member of the Friends church. The subject of this review was reared on a farm and received his education in the public schools of Marshall county, for the most part, having emigrated here with his parents in 1860. He began working in the fields when but a very small lad and he has always followed farming. He bought eighty acres and started in life for himself. Being a hard worker and a good manager, he accumulated rapidly and is now the owner of one of the choice farms of the township, consisting of two hundred and forty acres, which he has placed under excellent improvements. He has a modern and attractive home and substantial outbuildings. He is also the owner of valuable land in California, Oregon and Nebraska. He has been very successful in whatever he has turned his attention to and is one of the substantial men of his township. Mr. Heggem is a Republican in politics, but, while he is interested in the advancement of his community and aids in any practical manner toward the same, he has not been an office seeker, preferring to devote his attention exclusively to his large individual affairs. He and. his family are members of the Friends church. Mr. Heggem was married in 1876 to Regina Shelley, a native of Norway and the daughter of Paul and Johanna Shelley, who emigrated to America, locating in Marshall county, Iowa, in the early sixties. The mother died in Tama county and the father in Marshall county. To Mr. and Mrs. Heggem two children have been born: Johanna died in infancy; Theresa Rebecca was born in Marshall county, Iowa, on the old homestead, August 7, 1879, and she was educated in the public schools and Friends church school, receiving an excellent education. She married Nelson Rinden, a native of this county and the son of Ole Ingebretsen and Martha Rinden, his wife. They came to America in 1867 and settled in Marshall county, Iowa, where the parents both died. Mr. Rinden is a farmer by occupation and he works the farm of the subject. He is an excellent business man and is vice-president and director of the Dunbar Savings Bank. He is popular with the many patrons of the bank for his judicious handling of its affairs. Three children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Rinden, namely: Doris, Carroll and Martha. Mr. Heggem, in 1883, made a trip from Ellensburg, Washington, to Marshalltown, Iowa, making the entire journey on horseback, making the trip in three months steady riding.
