Description	:	Thresa on stone Theresa Austin Paine was born in Orleans, 1866. Her father, Alfred Paine, was a clipper ship captain, as was her grandfather Reuben Paine. Alfred, a devoted family man, took his family on many voyages under his command. Theresa and her two sisters grew up and were educated at sea; one of them was born on such a voyage. Her father, Alfred Paine, was a clipper ship captain, as was her grandfather Reuben Paine. Alfred, a devoted family man, took his family on many voyages under his command. Theresa and her two sisters grew up and were educated at sea; one of them was born on such a voyage. When she was quite young, she threw all of her school books overboard. Obviously, she preferred a hands-on education. While at sea Theresa learned math, sewing and writing by applying them to ship duties. Being exposed to numerous experiences in those early years, she proved herself to be self-sufficient and independent. Her travels around the world revealed the culture of many lands thereby generating a love of music and fashion in later life. In 1883 Captain Alfred Paine was near Mt. Krakatoa, a mountain island in the Sunday Strait, when a series of volcanic eruptions occurred. With giant waves and a hurricane force wind battering the ship, all deck hands were required to tend the sails. As the story goes, Theresa had no choice but to stand at the wheel and steer. She saved all with her quick thinking and practical training. Even at seventeen years of age, she proved to be a woman of substance. For fifty-eight years (1888-1946) she stood behind her husband, HK, supporting him throughout their life in the town of Orleans. Very little is known about this gracious, educated and worldly cultured person after 1905. The earlier photographs give insight into her relationships .with friends and family. It is said that behind every successful man there is usually an unassuming wife who dedicates her all to his well being and success. Over the years, H. K. Cummings has been held in great esteem for his business acumen, community philanthropy and photographic talent in documenting Cape Cod, particularly Orleans, from 1887-1905.
