Anderson Sr., 87, of Fourth Avenue, Conway, a former Horry County school superintendent who helped establish Coastal Carolina College, died Tuesday at Conway Hospital after an illness. He was born in Horry County, a son of the late Charles and Ina Hardee Anderson. He attended Baxter Grammar School and was a 1927 graduate of Burroughs High School, where he was salutatorian. Anderson Sr., 87, of Fourth Avenue, Conway, a former Horry County school superintendent who helped establish Coastal Carolina College, died Tuesday at Conway Hospital after an illness. He was born in Horry County, a son of the late Charles and Ina Hardee Anderson. He attended Baxter Grammar School and was a 1927 graduate of Burroughs High School, where he was salutatorian. He attended Clemson University, Furman University, Newberry College and received his master's degree in education from the University of South Carolina in 1959. Mr. Anderson was a teacher, principal and superintendent of Horry County schools from 1941 until his retirement in 1973. He presented the idea of establishing a college to the Horry County Board of Education and generated support among community leaders for what is now Coastal Carolina University. He was presented a Founders Medallion during Coastal's first Founders Day Convocation in 1987. Coastal Carolina University awarded him an honorary doctorate in public service in May 1994. Mr. Anderson received many awards, including the American Legion Distinguished Service Award, the Greater Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce Award for 30 years of outstanding leadership in developing quality education in Horry County, and the Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind Award. In 1992, he was the first inductee into the Conway High School Hall of Fame and received the Outstanding Educator Award. Mr. Anderson served on numerous boards and committees such as the board of directors for the Horry County Chapter of the United Way, and the Heart Fund's Speakers Bureau. He has been a member of Conway Lions Club since 1942 and held several posts including president, vice presivice president and secretary. He was a member of the National and Horry County Retired Teachers associations. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. He was Sunday school superintendent, church lay leader, a member of the administrative board and the United Methodist's Men's Association, district lay leader for the Marion District and a teacher for the Hut Bible school class. He and his wife were recognized as outstanding Methodists during the 1975 homecoming service. He served eight years on the Bishop's Episcopacy Committee of the South Carolina Methodist Conference and was a trustee of the Orangeburg Methodist Home. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Page Anderson; two sons, the Rev. Thurman Anderson Jr. of Spartanburg and Dr. Richard Anderson of Conway; a daughter, Margaret Ellison of Conway; and seven grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6-8 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel. The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
