Description	:	The Howards and the Humpresses came from England. Titus Howard and Sarah Humphress were born in Indiana and were married there. They later moved to Muscatine, Iowa; where their family of six children were born. They left Indiana for Colorado in the late 1800's. On the way, they stopped in Arkansas where Titus cut wood for the new Westbound Railroad. From Arkansas, they came to Iowa in about 1900. Read More	The Howards and the Humpresses came from England. Titus Howard and Sarah Humphress were born in Indiana and were married there. They later moved to Muscatine, Iowa; where their family of six children were born. They left Indiana for Colorado in the late 1800's. On the way, they stopped in Arkansas where Titus cut wood for the new Westbound Railroad. From Arkansas, they came to Iowa in about 1900. They lived on a farm southwest of Elliott (just down the road south of the old Reed farm). Their six children were three boys: Alfred, William and Herbert; and three girls: Emma, Maggie and Nellie. Alfred had the ice business in Elliott for a number of years. He never married. Herbert went to Oregon to live, after serving in the U. S. Army during World War I. Maggie married a Clause and had four children, one being Alfred Clause who lived in or near Elliott in later years. Nellie married an Anderson and had one son, named Sherwood, who lived in Red Oak for awhile, many years ago. Emma married a Myers. They had eight children. Only one of their children is still living. She is Mrs. Frank Burgess (Carrie). She and Frank and their children, Margaret and Howard lived here many years. She now lives in San Bernardino, California. William Howard worked for the Joe Petty Seed Co. and a Hardware store in Elliott. He married Hope Thompson (another family history in this book). They had two sons, Leon and Donald. Leon married Lucille Lary of Griswold, Ia. He served 22 years in the U. S. Navy and after retiring from the Navy he worked at Hill Air Force Base in Civil Service. He is retired now, and they live in Ogden, Utah and Boulder City, Nevada. They have two daughters, Jean Varner of Ogden, Utah; and Linda Stevens of Salt lake City, Utah. Donald married Velma Guffey of Elliott. He also retired from the U. S. Navy after serving 20 years. He started to work for the Telephone Co. in Elliott in 1957 after retiring from the Navy. In 1959, the Telephone Co. was sold to the Griswold Co-op Telephone Co. and Donald continued to work for them. He is still there at the present time. They have three children, Sandra Ward of Elliott, John of Lincoln, Nebr. and Bill of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
