Description	:	Tobine Jacobson was born in Christiania, Norway February 22, 1859. She came to the United States in 1881, landing in Duluth, Minnesota. From there they came to Sims North Dakota. The town of Sims was then booming because of the 2 coal mines and the one brock mine. The miners worked all day and night. Thinking that the more coal they dug the better it would be for them. Read More	Tobine Jacobson was born in Christiania, Norway February 22, 1859. She came to the United States in 1881, landing in Duluth, Minnesota. From there they came to Sims North Dakota. The town of Sims was then booming because of the 2 coal mines and the one brock mine. The miners worked all day and night. Thinking that the more coal they dug the better it would be for them. Sims had the population of 1000. Tobine worked in a hotel, owned by her sister and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Johnson. They served 800 people daily and the cooking, baking, waiting on table, their own laundry was all done by the 2 sisters. In 1884 she was married to John E. Olin. He came from Sweden in 1881 and homesteaded near Sims working in the coal mines in the winter time having to walk 3 miles to work. Money was scarce then, but there was plenty of work. Most all of the pioneers had a few sheep for the wool so that they could spin the thread to knit stockings for their families. The pioneers did all their sewing by hand, making all of their outer clothing and underwear. After the work was done and the babies put to bed, the mothers knitted and sewed all evening. Mr. and Mrs. John Olin had seven children. Their home has always been open to friends with plenty to eat for everyone. They worked hard for their family and were ready to help and do for others. Mr. Olin was a real sportsman, liked to go hunting. At that time Antelope were plentiful and he often brought home nine or ten after a hunt. Mrs. Olin was one of the first to start the Ladies Aid and she and Mr. Olin have always been great church workers. They are responsible for the success of the church in Sims during all of the years of their residence there. One day when Mr. Olin was working n the fields he plowed up an Indian skeleton . Being superstitious he got a box, put the bones into it, dug a deep hole in the same spot and buried it. When Mrs. Olin wished to call on her friends she hitched the white horse to a hay rake, placed one baby in an apple box, arranged it at her feet where she could brace it, held her other baby in her arms and drove to her friend's homes. The pioneer woman found a way. During a big prairie fire, her first thought was to get the children together, then to protect the house. One big fire burned from Curlow, North Dakota, went up the river and back to Curlow again, leaving everything black, it burned a number of school houses. This was about March 4, 1885. There was a storm in 1916 that left a pile of hail 4 feet high against their house. The path of the hail storm was a half a mile wide and extended to the Heart River. All of their windows in their house were broken.
