He was the eldest of nine children born to Seselia and Kristian Smordahl. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Myking, Bergan. He spent his early manhood working on a farm, doing some carpentry work, and fishing in Norway. He then decided to go to the United States and arrived here on July 18, 1902. When Tollef came to this country, he had three dollars in his pocket. He loaned two dollars to a friend, so he was left with only one dollar. He never did get his two dollars back, but managed to survive anyway. He settled in Sims, North Dakota and secured a job in a coal mine as a laborer and on the railroad. Tollef became a citizen and changed his name to Christianson from Smordahl. He homesteaded at Curlew, North Dakota and continued working on the railroad. Later he became a section foreman and remained that until he retired in 1950. His two brothers, Eilert and Edward also came to the United States to reside. Tollef's sisters, Josephine, Ellen and Maria, and brothers, Ole, Karl and Sigurd remained in Norway. His two sisters, Maria and Josephine have passed away. Tollef Christianson was married to Tobine Emilia Olson (daughter of Ben S. and Stina Olson) on July 25, 1907 in Sims Lutheran Church with Rev. Isolany presiding. 10 children were born to the couple: Selma (deceased); Ella (Mrs. V. L. Bradley); Conrad (deceased); Gertrude (Mrs. Mike Thiel); Mabel (Mrs. Alton Olin); Selma (Mrs. Martin Ostafin); Conrad; Esther (Mrs. Val Klusmann); Clara (Mrs. Marvin Wilkens) and Floyd. Tollef's first wife, Tobine, passed away on October 7, 1928. Tollef later married Anna Knutsen on December 12, 1940. He retired from the railroad at the age of 70 and moved to Glen Ullin , North Dakota, where he resided until his death on May 6, 1969, at the age of 88. His present wife Anna still resides in Glen Ullin, North Dakota. Other surviving family members are the eight children, 30 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren.
