Braaten was born the son of Garvin and Agnes (Strand) Braaten on August 14, 1937 in rural Portland, ND. He grew up and attended rural school in Viking Township and graduated from Portland High School. He worked for various farmers in the area and Schmidt Oil of Portland. Braaten was born the son of Garvin and Agnes (Strand) Braaten on August 14, 1937 in rural Portland, ND. He served in the National Guards for seven years. He was Township Supervisor of Viking Township, member of the Sons of Norway of Mayville, Traill Eagles Club, Mayville and the American Legion Club, Portland. Thomas is survived by his wife, Sandy Braaten, Portland, his mother, Agnes Braaten, Portland, two step-sons, Tim Haux, Hillsboro, Scott (Renae) Haux, Portland; one step-daughter, Ronell (Jim) Olstad, Maple Grove, MN; six step-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Larson, Portland, Lilah (Cliff) Johnson, Mandan, ND; and several nieces and nephews.
