Tom Grant Grace was born on March 1, 1926 in McIntire, Iowa, the son of Grant Fay “Clink” & Opal Marion (Lockie) Grace. He graduated from McIntire High School in 1943. Tom worked for the Chicago Great Western Railroad out of New Hampton for a year until his 18th birthday. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for over two years during W.W. II. Tom returned to work for the railroad following the war. Tom was united in marriage to Ann Celine Costigan on August 28, 1954 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, Iowa. Tom and Ann moved to Oelwein on January 1, 1957. Tom traveled as a signalman inspector and later was stationed in Oelwein as a maintainer of signal crossings. He retired from the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in 1989 after more than 46 ½ years of railroad service. Tom was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, N.A.R.V.R.E., V.F.W, Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post #9, Hub City Heritage Corporation Charter Member and past financial secretary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen #98. Tom loved baseball, dancing, big band music, watching Lawrence Welk and volunteering at the Hub City Museum. Tom was always available to anyone who needed something fixed or repaired. Some of his daughter, Amy’s, favorite memories are dancing with her dad. Tom is survived by his devoted Wife of 65 years: Ann Grace of Oelwein; Daughter: Amy (Steve) Henderson of Madison, Wisconsin & Son-In-Law: Terry Freese of East Dubuque, Illinois and 2 Grandchildren: Jamie Henderson of Minneapolis, Minnesota & Jared Freese of Dubuque. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; daughter: Susan Freese; 2 sisters: Mary Cartney & Peggy Davis and 2 brothers: Richard & Walter.
