Surviving are his wife, of 35 years, Marilyn, four children and eight grandchildren. Children include Kate (Jefferson) Akin, Melinda (Mike) Meyer, Rob (Dawn) Koenninger, and Susan (Ken) Baker. Grandchildren include Sarah and Jeffrey Baker, Stephen and Lauren Meyer, Allison and Jefferson Akin and Breanna and Ryan Koenninger. Tom Koenninger attended Sara Elementary School and was graduated from Ridgefield High School, Clark College, and The University of Washington. He began work as a reporter at The Chronicle in Centralia, and then was called to two years of active duty with the Navy, adding four years of service with the Navy Reserve. Returning to Centralia in 1955, he worked for The Chronicle until Dec. 12, 1956, when he was hired as a reporter at The Columbian. Koenninger was hired as associate editor of the Pacific Northwest Farm Quad, a Cowles Publication based in Spokane and publisher of four state farm magazines. He was later promoted to field editor of the Idaho Farmer. He left that job to accept a position as managing editor of The Chronicle in Centralia. From there he was hired as executive news director at The Columbian. During the next 27 years, he served as executive news editor, managing editor, vice president and editor, and editor emeritus at The Columbian. He also spent 10 years writing freelance articles and columns. The newspapers he served with won many journalism awards. He personally received several as well. His most recent was third place in the Pacific Northwest Region of The Society of Professional Journalists for editorials and commentary. He also served on state, regional and national journalism organizations. Koenninger retired from The Columbian in 2001, but continued to write a weekly column and occasional editorials until his death. He was also a member of The Columbian Editorial Board. Besides journalism, Koenninger had a strong record of community service. He was a member of the Centralia College Board of Trustees and served for nearly 12 years on the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. His community service included membership or affiliation with 19 organizations including Clark College Alumni Association, Board of Vancouver National Historic Trust, Leadership Clark County, Chairman of the Vancouver School District's Management Advisory Task Force and Board of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. He attended St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Vancouver, and was a member of the church vestry including a term as vestry co-chairman. In his leisure time Tom enjoyed family gatherings, canoeing, hiking, skiing, the beach, and exercising his dog Lucy. Services were held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 426 E 4th Plain, Vancouver, Washington 98663, on Saturday, October 9th, 2010 with a reception following.
