He was born Tommy LeRoy Sawyer on October 25, 1946 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City; the son of LeRoy Andrew and Betty Lou (Petersen) Sawyer. He attended school and graduated from the Syracuse High School, Syracuse, NE with the Class of 1965. He entered the United States Marine Corps on January 6, 1966 and served during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on December 9, 1968. He was united in marriage to Pamela Ann Tuning on December 22, 1967 at the United Methodist Church in Syracuse, NE and the couple had three children: Stacy, Suzanne and Scott. After serving his country, Tommy attended Peru State College from 1969 to 1972. He graduated in 1972 with his Bachelors Degree in Geography and a Minor in History. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Tom was an avid fisherman and loved gardening. He was a devoted Nebraska Cornhusker fan but his deepest loves were his children and grandchildren. He worked for Gartner Construction Co. in Unadilla, NE for several years and then owned and operated his own business, Tom Sawyer Painting. On November 20, 1990, Tommy married Catherine A. Ullsperger in Nebraska City. He is survived by his wife Catherine Sawyer of Nebr. City; children: Stacy Salvadori and husband Christopher of Yorktown, VA, Suzanne Dean and husband Shawn of Denver, CO, Scott Sawyer of Syracuse, NE, Michael Apfel and wife Melanie of Hutchinson, KS, Michelle Asselin and husband Todd of Malone, NY, Christopher Apfel of Lincoln, NE, Jill Bruner and husband Matt of Wichita, KS and Mark Apfel and wife Lindsey of Bellevue, NE; grandchildren: Zachary and Meredith Salvadori of Yorktown, VA, Alyssa, Christopher, Julia, Ethan and Tobias Dean of Denver, CO, Aspen Apfel of Hutchinson, KS, Autumn Apfel of Wichita, KS, Aubrey and Hayden Bruner of Wichita, KS, Aubrey and Autumn Asselin of Springfield, MA; great-grandchild Tristen Fordham of Centennial, CO; sister Connie Gross and husband Brad Trimble of Goodyear, AZ; an uncle Glen Petersen and wife Emily of Lincoln, NE, niece Kristi Yearout and husband Denny Good of Kanohe, HI; sister in law Virginia Ullsperger of Nebr. City; brother-in-law David Ullsperger and wife Rhonda of Nebr. City; other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and special aunts Ruby and Lilah Harms. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church in Syracuse or to the donor's favorite charity.
