Read More	ruman Wildes Camp was born on Dec. 6, 1904 in, Newington and died Friday (Jan. 23, 1998) in Dallas, TX. He was raised in Newington and attended New Britain High School. In 1922 he entered Yale College where he majored in English and graduated with honors in 1926. Undoubtedly influenced by a mother, two grandmothers, and an aunt who were former teachers, and several dynamic college professors, he planned a career of teaching and entered the Yale Graduate School for a study of English. Two years later, in 1928, the University of Texas in Austin offered him an instructorship in English, a position he filled for four years before returning to Yale to finish his doctoral program, which he achieved in 1935. A few weeks later he accepted an instructorship in English at Texas Technological College in Lubbock, TX, where he taught until his retirement in 1973, completing 38 years at Texas Tech and 42 years in the Texas system. For sixteen of these years, he was chairman of the English Department. While teaching, he was active in many local, state, regional, and national teachers of English Organizations, especially the Conference for the College Teachers of English, in which he was a member of the Executive Council, vice-president, and president in 1964. In Lubbock, he was president of the Friends of the Lubbock Public Library for two years and an executive in two United Fund drives. During World War II, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, rising to Captaincy. His main interests in addition to his family and profession were camping and travel. He visited and camped in most of the national parks and monuments and in all the states of the U.S.A., and visited and often camped in all of the continents except Antarctica. In 1984 he moved to Dallas and resided there until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Virginia Chapman Camp; and brothers, William F. Camp and Norman P. Camp of Connecticut. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Patsy Camp; grandchildren, Geoffrey, Julie, and Amanda Camp of Dallas; a niece, Nancy Farnan of Madison, CT; a nephew, David Camp of Henderson, TN. Private services will be held in Connecticut. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Truman and Virginia Camp English Scholarship Fund, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX 79409-2013. ''And gladly would he learn, and gladly teach.'' Chaucer. Mr. Camp was also a direct line descendent of John and Mary Sanford Camp, 17th century settlers of Hartford.
