Description	:	Clyde E. Bailey passed away Thursday, May 21st. Born November 10, 1914, Clyde was the youngest of five children. He was an Iowa State Spelling Bee Champion. Following high school, Mr. Bailey acquired a teaching certificate from Maryville State Teacher's College, Maryville, MO. Clyde's first teaching position was in Minburn, IA. He also coached girl's basketball. Following his girl's final tournament basketball game in 1942, his loyal players walked him to the train where he departed for the military. Born November 10, 1914, Clyde was the youngest of five children. He was an Iowa State Spelling Bee Champion. Following high school, Mr. Bailey acquired a teaching certificate from Maryville State Teacher's College, Maryville, MO. Clyde's first teaching position was in Minburn, IA. He also coached girl's basketball. Following his girl's final tournament basketball game in 1942, his loyal players walked him to the train where he departed for the military. During the war years, Clyde served as one of the team of meteorologists in England during World War II and participated in the forecasting of the weather for the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. A graduate of the University of Iowa in 1947, Mr. Bailey continued his teaching at Churchill Junior High in Galesburg, IL. In the fall of 1952, Clyde accepted a teaching position at Creston High School in Creston, IA. In the summer of 1955, Clyde accepted a position at Blue Island Eisenhower High School, where he established the first Distributive Education Program (Now known as DECA- an association of marketing students). For 21 years,this program grew and flourished under his guidance. He and his students received many honors and distinctions at the local, state and national level. In 1974, Clyde was named DECA Man-of-the-Year. Clyde became known as "Mr. D.E." or the "Old Master." He received his Masters Degree from Indiana State University and did post graduate work at several universities. After retiring from teaching in 1976, Clyde participated in Senior Olympic competition and amassed 87 medals. One of Mr. Bailey's most prestigious honors came from Illinois DECA and Illinois Foundation for Marketing Education, where they recognized him for contributing the most to this educational discipline in the State of Illinois for the last 50 years of the 20th Century. Clyde never married. He will be dearly remembered by his adopted family, Wallace and Jane Wirth of Georgetown, TX; and his two Godsons, Charles (Ted) Wirth of Fenton, MI and Todd Wirth of Atlanta, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Paralyzed U.S. Veterans Association. Burial will follow at the Clearfield Cemetery in Clearfield, Ia.
