He was survived by his parents and siblings: Bill, Cleo, Calvin, Ralph, Everett, and John. Eugene was one of the 41 seniors who graduated in 1939 from Garfield County High School in Jordan, Montana the Garfield County seat. Read More	James Eugene "Red" Davenport was born in Garfield County Montana on December 10, 1920 to Winnie Lee and William Smith Davenport. He died on June 11, 1944. He was survived by his parents and siblings: Bill, Cleo, Calvin, Ralph, Everett, and John. Eugene was one of the 41 seniors who graduated in 1939 from Garfield County High School in Jordan, Montana the Garfield County seat. On September 16, 1940 "Red" a six foot tall, 155#, single, 19-year-old, livestock farm hand, enlisted as a Private in the Infantry branch of the Montana National Guard at Sidney MT. Service number: 20928828. The Montana National Guard was part of the 41st (Infantry) Division Headquarters Staff, 163rd Infantry regiment. They were housed at "Camp Murray" while Ft. Lewis was under construction. In March 1942 they were sent to Australia. Their engagements included the Battle of Buna-Gona, the Salamaua-Lae campaign, Operations Reckless and Persecution and the Battle of Biak, as well as the liberation of the Philippines. The 41st were nicknamed "The Jungleers." Technical Sergeant J. E. Davenport, SN 20928828, Company A, 163rd Infantry, 41st Division (From Garfield County Montana) was Killed In Action from enemy action in the Biak Campaign. He was one of the 474 killed on Biak Island. In 1944 the Biak Island was part of "Dutch New Guinea" but occupied by Japan. Biak is now in the Indonesia Province of Papua (and Western New Guinea area) west of Papua New Guinea. Biak is 1 degree south of the equator. Palau is 600 miles north. Port Moresby is 950 miles southeast. The funeral was held on Thursday July 14, 1949 at 2 PM in the Presbyterian church in Jordan, MT. Burial was in the Pioneer Cemetery. The arrangements were under the care of Graves Funeral Home of Miles City after receiving the remains of Lt. Sgt. Davenport from the military when they arrived by rail on Monday July 11. http://jungleer.com/
