Mr. Campbell was born Sept. 24, 1915, at Manly, the son of James and Ann (Forrett) Campbell. He attended schools in Dougherty and was a World War II veteran. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 and received the Distinguished Service Cross. He had been employed by the Chicago and North Western Railroad for a number of years and for the past 25 years was employed by Campbell's General Store in Dougherty. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the American Legion Brislin-Hogan Post 354. Survivors include a brother, Alvin (Lefty) Campbell of Long Beach, Calif., and several nieces and nephews. In December 1942, then-Private Robert Harold Campbell was serving with Company M, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division. From 7 December 1942 through 1 January 1943, PVT Campbell's unit was in action against Japanese forces in Buna, New Guinea. PVT Campbell's courageous actions and extraordinary heroism during that time earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. Post-Military Life After his discharge, Campbell worked for the Chicago and North Western Railroad. For the past 25 years he was employed by Campbell's General Store in Dougherty. Private Campbell's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
