He received his education in rural schools in the Keldron, South Dakota area. He was united in marriage with Doris L. Powell on September 3, 1944 at Garretson, South Dakota. Upon his return from the military, he worked at John Morrell and Co. from... Read More	Walter Hoiland, 91, of Sioux Falls, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at Bethany Lutheran Home in Sioux Falls. Walter H. Hoiland was born March 7, 1919 at White Deer, South Dakota. He received his education in rural schools in the Keldron, South Dakota area. He was united in marriage with Doris L. Powell on September 3, 1944 at Garretson, South Dakota. Following their marriage, Walter entered military service and served his country in the US Army. He received his honorable discharge from the service on September 1, 1946. Upon his return from the military, he worked at John Morrell and Co. from 1947 until 1952. At that time, he began his career with Ray Anderson Grocery Feed and Seed. Walter worked as a store clerk for 28 years, retiring in 1978. From 1977 to 1979, he also worked as a custodian for Valley Bank in Sioux Falls. On January 5, 1974, he married Kathryn Gjere at Sioux Falls. She preceded him in death in March of 1986. Walter was a member of East Side Lutheran Church, the V.F.W., the Center for Active Generations and the Senior Companion Program. Walter was a great lover of music, and enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica with several local bands. In his younger years, he sang in a vocal quartet. His most recent musical accomplishment was playing with Mike Rothenbuehler at the Knopf Assisted living center in 2002. Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Bonnie (Rodney) Anderson of Antioch, TN; a son, Darrel (Mickie) Hoiland of Brandon, SD; and two grandchildren, Lee and Jason Anderson. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Anna Hoiland; his brothers, Alvin and Marshall; and a sister, Cora Powell. Funeral services were held at East Side Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Hills of Rest Memorial Park.
