Ulbe's paternal grandparents were Bauke Ulbes Tijmstra and Trijntje Gatzes Bijlsma, and his maternal grandparents were Jan Tjeerds Hofstra and Trijntje Tjallings Sieswerda. Ulbe's paternal grandparents were Bauke Ulbes Tijmstra and Trijntje Gatzes Bijlsma, and his maternal grandparents were Jan Tjeerds Hofstra and Trijntje Tjallings Sieswerda. Ulbe married Rooske de Boer (born April 5, 1857), the daughter of Johannes Tjerks de Boer and Willemke Gerbens de Groot on May 11, 1879 in Bolsward. Ulbe was 24 years old, and Rooske was 22 years old. When Rooske died an early death, she left Ulbe with four children. On October 25, 1896, at the age of 42, Ulbe married the widow Sytske de Haas (= the Haire) in Bolsward. Sytske was the daughter of IJsbrand Cornelis de Haas and Antje Sybrens Jongma, and had been born in Schettens, Wonseradeel. She was 39 years old, and she had two children of her own. One of her children - Jan Anema - would later immigrate to the United States with her step-son Siebren Tiemstra. Ulbe and Sytske had two more children between them. IJsbrand Tijmstra was born on September 1, 1897 in Bolsward. Charles (Tjeerd) was born January 30, 1903. Ulbe's second wife Sijtske de Haas died January 12, 1919 during the flu epidemic in the city of Bolsward, mid-western Friesland. In 1920 Charles decided to immigrate to Canada, and persuaded Ike to come along. Ulbe decided to go along as well, and visit Siebren, who was in Neerlandia at this time. Initially Ulbe was just going for a six-month visit, but he liked the country so much, he decided to remain in Canada. Ulbe's siblings were: - Brother Wiebe Tijmstra born March 26, 1849. Wiebe (age 36) married Tjitske Bos ( age 21) on March 28, 1885 in Hennaarderadeel. - Tjalling Tijmstra born December 2, 1856 - Trijntje Tijmstra born February 16, 1859 - Hotske Tijmstra born January 31, 1862 * Ulbe is buried in the same plot as his grandson Ysbrand Tiemstra
