Description	:	JAMES AND UNA (HATCHER) BALL FAMILY James Curtis Ball and Una Viola Hatcher were married July 27, 1884. They lived in various places in Mitchell County. Mr. Ball worked as a day laborer, farmed and in later years was a peanut and popcorn vendor at auction sales. James Ball was born March 18, 1860 in Iowa and died October 15, 1941 in... Read More	JAMES AND UNA (HATCHER) BALL FAMILY James Curtis Ball and Una Viola Hatcher were married July 27, 1884. They lived in various places in Mitchell County. Mr. Ball worked as a day laborer, farmed and in later years was a peanut and popcorn vendor at auction sales. At one time he was a stagecoach driver until an accident resulting in the loss of one leg below the knee. He was backing the horses across the railroad track when the switch engine hit him. James Ball was born March 18, 1860 in Iowa and died October 15, 1941 in Osage. He was the son of George Clinton Ball, an iron and tinware trader, who was born January 6, 1840 in Indiana and came to Iowa at the age of 13, living in Osage until his death November 9, 1897. Mrs. Ball [Una] was born March 25, 1865, daughter of Levi Hatcher who lived on a turkey farm near Orchard, Iowa. She died at Nary, Minnesota on September 20, 1947 at the home of her son Walter. The family of James and Una Ball: 1.- Mary Elizabeth, April 10, 1885 to March 29, 1891. 2.- Pearl Grace, born December 20, 1887, married Walter Penney, son of Albert and Laura Penney of Stacyville on September 9, 1908. The young couple moved to Hugo, Oregon and operated a cherry and fruit orchard. They retired in Grants Pass, Oregon. Mr. Penney died January 5, 1961 and Pearl died March 12, 1981. They had no children. 3.- Walter Ray, born April 23, 1891, married Fern Springer, daughter of Jeremiah and Cahterine Springer in Osage, Iowa on August 10, 1917. They farmed for two years near Toeterville and then moved to a farm at Nary, Minnesota. They had two children: Vivian (Mrs. Roy) Forte and Glen both of Bemidji. Walter died March 21, 1980 and Fern January 4, 1984. 4.- William Herbert born February 21, 1894, served in the armed forces in WWI stationed in California, liked the area and remained in Los Angeles. He was an interior decorator and owned a paint store in Tarzana, California. He was married to Lilly Barnes on July 12, 1920. They had two children, Una Hope (Mrs. Gene) Fucci and Herbert both of Los Angeles. Herb died March 6, 1976 and his wife is still living in Tarzana. [This James Ball story written 1989] 5.- George Levi, (February 22, 1896 - September 12, 1896) 6.- Elsie Mae (Mrs. Clarence) Diedrich, born November 20, 1897 and lived in Worth County, Iowa. They had three children: LaVerne of Northwood, Iowa, Mildred (Mrs. Udell) Larson of Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Doris (Mrs. Clifford) Dirksen of Duluth, Minnesota. 6.- Ralph Theodore Albertus, "Bert", born October 10, 1900 and moved to Los Angeles about 1920. He married Ruth Buergelin September 17, 1925 and died April 7, 1941 in Los Angeles. They had one son, William James of Friday Harbor, Washington. 7. -Cecil Preston, January 16, 1903 to September 10, 1905. 8.- Leonard Galen, born November 19, 1905, worked as a farm hand in Osage area until 1940 when he served in the U. S. Army until 1945, then worked at the U.S. Air Base in Sacramento, California until his retirement in 1971. He married Ethel McHenry in 1967. They had no children and he is still living in Carmichael, California [This James Ball story written 1989], 9.
