Born July 4, 1918, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Henry and Thresa Menke Sallen. On Jan. 13, 1951, he married Lillian V. Ashby in Fort Madison. She died April 23, 1988. Sallen, 93, of Fort Madison died at 1:08 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at his home at The Kensington. Born July 4, 1918, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Henry and Thresa Menke Sallen. On Jan. 13, 1951, he married Lillian V. Ashby in Fort Madison. She died April 23, 1988. Mr. Sallen was a locomotive engineer with the Santa Fe Railroad for 38 years. He was a 1938 graduate and valedictorian of Catholic Central High School. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps, serving during World War II with the 2nd Marine Division in the South Pacific Theater from 1941 to 1945. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Parish and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 739, Fort Madison. He was the oldest living Eagle Scout with the Mississippi Valley Council. He was a member of the Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, Fort Madison Elks and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed golfing. Survivors include two sons, David Sallen of Fort Madison and James Sallen of Bloomington, Ill.; three grandsons; and one brother, Don Sallen of Prescott, Ariz. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one granddaughter in infancy. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Sallen will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Parish, SS. Mary and Joseph Church, Fort Madison, with the Revs. David Wilkening and Mark Spring as co-celebrants. Burial with full military rites by Fort Madison Veterans Honor Guard will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Fort Madison. A memorial has been established for Gethsemane Cemetery and for Masses.
