He was born in Exeter on March 11, 1911, and was the only child of Peter and Mary Becker. Read More	Urban Jacob Becker passed away at the Fillmore County Hospital on March 8th, 1996, at the age of 84 years. He was born in Exeter on March 11, 1911, and was the only child of Peter and Mary Becker. He attended St. Stephen's Parochial School in Exeter, and was a life-time member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church. Urban married Martha Winkler on April 9, 1931, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter. They farmed near Burress for a short period of time, then moved to a farm near Fairmont, where they lived until retirement. Then they moved to their present home in Exeter. To the five children were born--four sons, Gaylord, Rex, Louis and Lester; and one daughter, Darlene. The church was his guideline. His faith was strong. In spite of more than one handicap, he did not complain. He remained optimistic through the good and the bad times. He was an avid reader, keeping up with world events through books and magazines. His memory of history, world affairs, and the people around him was outstanding. He was a wonderful conversationalist and enjoyed visiting friends and family. His interest in people was genuine and strangers were always welcome in his home. He treated all of his family fairly and equally. He had great respect for people that spoke up as to where they stood on an issue, and he would do the same. He idolized Harry S. Truman. This may be due to the fact that he was like Truman in many ways. He accepted the responsibility that was his, and believed as Truman did that, "The Buck stops here." He worked hard to set a good example for his family to follow. Urban was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Mary Becker. He is survived by his wife, Martha of Exeter; sons Gaylord and wife, Marilue of Lincoln, Rex and Judy of Rockford, Ill, and Lester and wife Linda of Exeter; daughter Darlene (Duane) Dantel of Beatrice; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter, on Monday, March 11, with Father John Glaves officiating. Casket bearers were Kevin Becker, Greg Becker, Mark Becker, Pat Becker, Christ Becker and Will Dantel. Interment was in the Exeter Cemetery. Nebraska Signal March 13th, 1996 page 20.
