They lived in Omaha, Nebr. before moving to Box Butte County, Nebr. in 1887 where they settled near Hemingford. According to the census of that year James was born 1853 in Bohemia, emigrated to the United States in 1880, was naturalized, and had been married 21 years. In 1910 James, his wife, and their two youngest children farmed in Hobart Township, Garfield County, Oklahoma. The census states that James was 59 years old, born Bohemia, had been married 35 years, emigrated to the United States in 1883, and was naturalized. By 1920 the couple had retired from farming. The census taken that year records them as living with their son Frank in Dublin Precinct, Boone County, Nebr. James was 73 years old, born in Bohemia, emigrated to the United States in 1880 and was naturalized in 1885. In 1930 James, by now a widower, farmed in South Branch Township, Nance County, Nebr., next to his son and daughter-in-law John and Maggie Bruna. The census states he was 83 years old, born Czechoslovakia, married at the age of 20, and emigrated to the United States in 1882. In 1940 James Bruna, age 103 years [!], born Bohemia, was a roomer in the W.R. and Freda Snyder residence in Fullerton (Mrs. Snyder operated a private nursing home). ```````````````````````````` Cedar Rapids Leader-Outlook (Cedar Rapids, Nebr.), April 18, 1940, p. 1, col. 7 Last Rites Are Held For John Bruna, Sr. Passed Away At His Home In Fullerton at 102 Years; Was Born in Bohemia Funeral services for John Bruna, 102, were held in St. Anthony's church Wednesday morning, April 17, at 9:00 o'clock. Burial was made in the parish cemetery at the side of his wife. Father Vermullen, pastor read the Requiem Mass and conducted the graveside services. Mr. Bruna died at his home in Fullerton Sunday, April 14. He had been in good health until a short time before his death. He was born in Bohemia in 1838 and came to the United States when a young man. He first located in Omaha and then moved to Dodge and Greeley counties and then to Nance county where he made his home with his son, John Jr. After his son moved to Missouri this spring he made his home in Fullerton. He is survived by four sons and four daughters. Mrs. Bruna died several years ago. ````````````````````````` Nance County Journal (Fullerton, Nebr.), April 25, 1940, p. 5, col. 3 John Bruna, Sr. John Bruna, Sr., 93, pioneer Nebraskan, died Sunday, April 14, at Fullerton. He was born in Austria in September, 1846, and came to United States as a young man. After living in Dodge and Greeley counties he moved to Nance county where he made his home with his son, John, Jr. When his son moved to Missouri this spring, he moved to Fullerton to reside. He was married to Frantiska Charvat in 1879, and fourteen children were born to their union. Six have preceded him in death and the eight surviving are John Bruna, Jr., of Ladonia, Mo., Mrs. Ben Schlosser of Perry, Okla., Mrs. Tonie Gabriel of Bison, Okla., Mrs. Edd Wanek of Primrose, Mrs. John Wanek of Wolbach, Mrs. George Wanek of Boone, Joseph Wanek [sic] of Alma and Frank Bruna of Alma, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning of last week at St. Anthony's Catholic church at Cedar Rapids with Fr. Vermullen officiating at the requiem mass. Interment was made in the parish cemetery.
