On Tuesday February 14th “Grandma” Mazanec died at her home three miles northwest of Bruno, of paralysis. Arrangements were made for the funeral to be held on Saturday from the Catholic church in Abie, but as the friends gathered at the Mazanec home in the morning they were informed that “Grandpa” Mazanec had died early that morning and that the funeral would be postponed until Monday. On Monday, February 20, the funeral of this aged couple was held at the Abie church, services being conducted by Rev. Father Zalud of Bruno. The remains of this loving old couple were laid to rest side by side in the same grave in the Abie cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Mazanec moved from Moravia, Europe, to this country in the spring of 1871, locating on a piece of land three miles northwest of Bruno, where they resided continuously for nearly 34 years, braving all the hard times and trials of pioneer life, which all the early settlers endured, such as crop failures by drouth, grass hoppers, etc., when farmers were often left with but little besides their sod houses. The old gentleman was strong and robust all his life, up to nearly the last hour, when he died suddenly. He often made the remark that in case his wife died first, he wanted to die too, as he did not want to live here without her, and thus it was, for in four days after her death, he passed away, and while they lived happy together in this life let us hope that their spirits may dwell together in perpetual happiness beyond the grave.
