Mr. Nekola had apparently been in good health and had been downtown Monday morning as usual. He became somewhat ill later in the day and was thought to be suffering from flu. He died suddenly about 3:30 o’clock Tuesday morning as the result of a heart attack. Rudolph Sevcik, another of this community’s long-time residents, was claimed suddenly in much the same fashion only about a week before. The Rev. Father Thomas Vopatek conducted funeral services for Mr. Nekola yesterday morning—at the home at 9 a. m. and at the Immaculate Conception church at 10 o’clock. Burial was at St. Vaclav cemetery, west of town. Casket bearers were Frank T. Dvorak, J. J. Chalupnik, John Hach, Fred W. Cizek, Vencil Rund and John Mareda. Born near Pizen, Czecho-Slovakia, December 26, 1863, the decedent came to America with his parents when he was only 8 years old. His marriage to Fanny Benesh, who also had been born near Pizen but did not come to America until about 1885, took place Dec. 26, 1888, at Chelsea, on Mr. Nekola’s twenty-fifth birthday. The couple started farming in Otter Creek township, where they lived until they retired and moved to Clutier about fifteen years ago. Their golden wedding anniversary was appropriately celebrated here last December. In addition to his farming activities, Mr. Nekola was a skilled carpenter, and built most of the farm buildings on his home place in Otter Creek as well as erecting many buildings on the farms of his sons. In later years his chief hobby was carving wooden toys for his grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Nekola are the parents of six children, all of whom, with the widow, survive. They are Charles Nekola, north of Toledo; Mrs. Frank Dostal, of Howard township; James Nekola Jr., east of Tama; Fred and Emil Nekola, both living east of Toledo; and Mrs. Louis Kolash, near Clutier. Fourteen grandchildren also are living. Mr. Nekola was a member of a family of eight children, of whom only one sister, Mrs. Anna Hrabak, of Vining, now remains.
