Harris farm, just below the cemetery, last evening about seven o'clock. In company with Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Barber, Marjorie DePew, Adelaide Barber, Andrew Scully and Bud Barber, Vada had gone to the river for a swim. The three girls had an inflated auto tire and were playing in the water and drifted in where the water was six feet deep. By some reason the air leaked out of the tire and left them helpless in deep water. Their cries brought Andrew Scully, who plunged in but could swim but littel and soon as helpless as the others. Edwin Barber rushed in to assist but he being unable to swim was soon exhausted. Bud Barber then arrived at the danger pool and plunged in and with the help of Marjorie DePew, who could swim a little, they succeeded in bringing out Edwin Barber and his little daughter, Adelaide, both of whom were prostrated and partially insensible. All this time Vada had remained in the water and until a few minutes later when Dr. DePew, who learning that the children had gone to the river had becoming uneasy, started to where the party had gone and had arrived at the cemetery where he met Bud Barber and his daughter Marjorie, coming for him. He entered the pool and very soon brought the body out and he and Dr. Grimmell worked hard to bring back life by there was no hope from the first. The body was brought to the Ransom undertaking parlor and the parents notified. Sheriff Blizard was down below Longton at the time and it was an hour or more before he could be brought to Howard. He and his wife were almost crazed by the calamity. Vada was about fifteen years old, was a beautiful child with a sweet disposition and loved by all and her death was a terrible shock to all.
