Description	:	Valentine Long married Phrana (Francy) Yakeley in 1824. They were both from North Carolina and moved to Indina ten years later. Then, in 1849, they moved to Appanoose County. Six or eight families made the long tedius trip together in prairie schooners drawn by oxen. The women and children rode in the wagons, while the men and boys walked and drove the livestock. Six or eight families made the long tedius trip together in prairie schooners drawn by oxen. The women and children rode in the wagons, while the men and boys walked and drove the livestock. The Long family brought with them eight yoke of oxen, a horse and buggy, five cows, a four week old calf, and sone sheep. Upon arrival, Mr. Long bought 160 acres along theChariton River, northeast of Centerville for $5.00 an acre. He entered 1000 acres, later giving 80 acres to each of his eight sons. sons George W. and John S. Long received the original homestead containing the two-room log cabin in Section 17. In those days, there was real excitement in breaking the sod to plant corn. Gopher burrows made good rattlesnake dens, and the Long boys armed with clubs mist go ahead of oxen and plow to kill the snakes. They also helped kill boar and wildcats. The deer would come to the spring below the house to drink. Wild turkey were plentiful and sometimes had to be chased from the corn cribs. Fish could be caught in the Chariton River. Once t hey caught a blue catfish weighing 40 pounds. Fruit was sorely missed. Mr. Long finally had an orchard of about five acres. The boys would fill their pockets from the orchard on the way to school, and no other apples ever tasted quite so good.
