As on the wings of the wind, the word flew over our town and community that death had claimed another early settler and veteran in the person of Uncle "Tine" Harlan, as he was familiarly called. Valentine, son of George and Julia Harlan, was born in Darke county, Ohio, September 25, 1842, and passed away at his home in Osceola, Iowa, Wednesday, August 9, 1922, aged 79 years, 10 months and 14 days. In June, 1865, he was married to Elizabeth C. Musselman-Wells and to them six children were born, Mrs. Fred Luther[Myrtle] being the only surviving child. His first wife died March 11, 1911, and he was again married, to Jennett Rushing September 12, 1912, who is left to sorrow. He also leaves one brother, Jacob, of Rosco, Mo., who was unable to attend the funeral, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. When a young man he came with his parents from Ohio, first to Lee county and later to Clarke county, Iowa. At the age of 18 he enlisted in Co. B 6th Iowa Inft., and when his term of enlistment expired re-enlisted January 26, 1864 where he served his country faithfully until the close of the war. He was a member of the local G.A.R. Post, whose members attended the services in a body. At the close of the war following his marriage he with his wife first lived on what is by some known as the old Peterson place northeast of Osceola, but later moved to a farm near Jamison, Iowa, where he lived for some years before taking up his residence in Osceola where he has made his home for some twenty years. In early manhood he united with the Church of Christ, and not only honored God in his own life, but reared his children in the faith once for all delivered to the saints. His death has brought the cup of sorrow to the lips of friends and relatives. His was a heart of gold. He was one of natures noblemen in the truest sense -- brave, generous, manly. His was the soul of honor, and his friends and friendships were sacred to him. He was a kind and loving father, believing that "Men and women, youth and children, seek the friendship of the sunny faced." The funeral services were held at the Osceola Christian church Saturday, August 12th, at 2:30 p.m. in charge of Elder E.W. Bowers, Murray, Iowa, assisted by Evangelist Cooper and Elder S.D. Harlan, Bedford, Iowa, after which the body was laid to rest in the Union Chapel cemetery.
