The first home of Valeria Luella Baldwin was at Albia, Iowa, where she was born December 31, 1858, the only daughter of Thomas and Nancy Emery Baldwin. The first home of Valeria Luella Baldwin was at Albia, Iowa, where she was born December 31, 1858, the only daughter of Thomas and Nancy Emery Baldwin. Ten years of her girlhood were spent there and then she moved with her parents to Newton, Iowa, where she lived for the next nineteen years. In 1887, she came to Fairmont, Nebraska, which has been her home ever since. It was here she met her husband, Fred C. Patterson, to whom she was married on September 24, 1890. It was here also their two sons, George R. and C. Vern were born. After their marriage they established a home on their farm one and one-half miles north of Fairmont, where they lived until 1918, when they moved to Farimont, which has been her home until her death. Naturally many bonds of fellowship were made during these fifty-one years at Fairmont. There was the fellowship within the church. Her people were Quakers and she had belonged to that denomination at Newton, Iowa. But not finding her church here, she did not hesitate to choose another, and on March 9, 1890, she united with the local Methodist Episcopal church, and has been a continuous member since. She found companionship also in the Eastern Star and Royal Neighbor lodges, and was a member of the former at her death. But her nearest friends were in the Sunset Club, of which she was president. Many other lasting friendships were made in the community throughout the years. Her friends meant much to her and, until the end, her interest never lessened in their joys and sorrows. During her failing health nothing cheered her more than a visit with her friends. She will be greatly missed in the community. Wednesday evening May 18, 1938, she made her departure for her eternal home. She will be remembered as a faithful wife, a devoted mother and a loyal friend. We bid her adieu sorrowfully, knowing that she will not return to us, yet happy in the knowledge of the Christian Hope that we may expect to renew our fellowship with her in the Father's house. Mrs. Patterson was preceded in death by her father, mother, a brother and one grandson. Besides the husband and two sons aforementioned, three brothers, J.D., Charles and Frank Baldwin, all of Newton, Iowa, survive. There are also the following living grandchildren: Robert, Donald, Patricia Anne Betty June and George Gayle Patterson. Funeral services were conducted from the Fairmont Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2:30 by Rev. Robert L. Embree. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Charles Little, Mrs. Mabel Quinlan, Oliver Moul and W.E. Black; and "Jesus Knows the Way" was sung by Tom Clark of Exeter, a friend of the family. The pallbearers were J.A. Lefler, Jacob Kelch, C.C. McElvain, Ray Boomer, T.W. Drummond and F.M. Thompson. The flower girls were Eleanor Goodrich, Marian Nichols, Doris Foulon, Norma Grobe, Roine Michaels and Evelyn Bridgman. Relatives from out of town who attended the services beside the two sons and their families were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Baldwin and son Clarence; J.D. Baldwin and daughter, Floy, all of Newton, Iowa, brothers of Mrs. Patterson. Others attending the services from out of town were: Prof. and Mrs. H.A. Thompson, Hansen; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Boomer, Davenport; Mrs. H.J. Adcock, Nora, and Ralph Barkell of Charleton.
