Valerina K Asbra was born April 15, 1915 in Bow Valley Nebraska to Steve and Mary (Bergman) Asbra. She grew up in Hartington Nebraska where she graduated from Hartington High School. Read More	Obit provided by Member 47110799 Miller Funeral Home- 5/2012 Valerina K Beckman, 97, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls. Valerina K Asbra was born April 15, 1915 in Bow Valley Nebraska to Steve and Mary (Bergman) Asbra. She grew up in Hartington Nebraska where she graduated from Hartington High School. She married Joseph H Beckman January 26, 1937 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1940, the two started JH Beckman Construction Company. They worked side by side building the company -constructing highways, bridges, dams, and airbases around the country. They were blessed with two children Pat and Pam. The love of her life was tragically killed on December 3, 1963 near Reliance, South Dakota after attending a highway letting in Pierre. Val never remarried and emerged herself by serving the Sioux Falls Community. Val's devotion to her Catholic faith allowed her to have a pivotal role in the restoration of St Michael's Cemetery, the creation of Avera's Prince of Peace Retirement Community, establishing the St Francis House and the beginnings of the St Vincent De Paul Society. She also was involved in O'Gorman's student work scholarship program and a member of the Catholic Daughters for over 50 years. In 1996, Val was bestowed the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Award of Merit from Pope John Paul II for her service and dedication to the church. Val also served on a number of community boards, such as, Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, SD Tourism Board and the St Michael's Cemetery. She was a sister of PEO, Chapter CL.She also was instrumental in the starting of the Sioux Vocational School (Achieve) and delivered for Meals on Wheels for many years. Val was truly a "Side Walk Angel". Val loved to travel with her family and her close friends. She was fortunate enough to have stepped foot on every continent except Antarctica. Joe and Val, with a number of close friends were one of the last tour groups allowed in to Cuba before Castro closed the country off. If she wasn't traveling or volunteering she was playing bridge. Val was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe, her daughter Pam, brothers Emmet and Kenneth Asbra and her sisters Emma Lou Radillo and Mary Ann Haberer. She is survived by her son Pat and wife Sandy Beckman, Sioux Falls. Five grandchildren; Justin Beckman, Sioux Falls, Andrea Beckman, Sioux Falls, Joe and wife Cindy Fisher of Indianapolis IN, Jim and wife Sherri Fisher of Newburg IN and Scott and wife Ryan Fisher of Indianapolis IN. She was blessed with six great grandchildren; Savannah and Hayden Fisher, Avery, Alex, Addie Kate Fisher, and Lizzy Grace Fisher. The visitation will be Monday May 14th at the downtown Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls with family present from 6:00-7:00 pm, followed by a prayer service starting at 7PM followed by Catholic Daughters Rosary. The funeral will be Tuesday May 15th at Christ the King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls at 11am. Interment will follow at St Michaels Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Memorials may be directed to the St Francis House in Sioux Falls, St Michaels Cemetery in Sioux Falls or a memorial of your choice.
