He married Kathy Walter July 2, 1983.A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1975, he served in the Iowa Army National Guard, earning the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.He was an insurance agent, owning Wapello Insurance Agency. He served as mayor of Ottumwa from 2002-04 and was instrumental in the development of the retail area of Menards and Walmart as well as in the streets and sewer project during his mayoral term. He also worked to improve the funding for the Ottumwa Public Library. Currently, he was attending Indian Hills Community College working toward a teaching certificate.He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he had served as usher and was former chair of the Worship and Prayer Committee. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was formerly a member and past president of Ottumwa Evening Lions Club, where he had been named a Melvin Jones Fellow. Van was very active and proud of his community. He was a den leader for Cub Scouts for four years, was an assistant scout master for Boy Scouts and was a committee chair for Troop 11. He was very proud that he had traveled on the Boundary Waters Boy Scout Trip with his son. He was also involved with Trees Forever. He had a large interest in local history, helping at the Ottumwa Public Library, local schools and assisting with the Ottumwa Cemetery Tours. His support was well-known for Camp Wapello, which he attended when he was a boy. He also greatly enjoyed and was proud of Wildwood Park.Along with his daughter, he was active in the Democratic Party. He and his son were avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fans. Surviving are his wife, Kathy; two children, Susan, who is attending the University of Iowa, and Michael Gates, at home; four brothers, Bill (Margaret) Gates, Duane (Neta) Gates, Kurt (Cindi) Gates all of Ottumwa, and Greg Gates of Burlington; a sister, Debbie (Mark) Lewis of Bend, Ore.; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church; Fr. John Spiegel presiding. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services by the Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation will start at 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake Service will be at 5 p.m. followed by family visitation until 8 p.m.Memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church, Boy Scouts for scholarships or to the family for his children's education.
