Description	:	Van Orr Mason Butler, the son of Winfield Scott and Eleanor (Hill) Butler, was born Aug. 25, 1914 in Philadelphia, Penn. After his father's death his mother remarried Burt Morss of Decorah, and the family moved to Decorah. Van Butler graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1932. He married Pearl L. Carlson March 25, 1936 in Caledonia, Minn. To this union four children were born: Eleanor, Gertrude, Carol and Steven. Read More	Van Orr Mason Butler, the son of Winfield Scott and Eleanor (Hill) Butler, was born Aug. 25, 1914 in Philadelphia, Penn. After his father's death his mother remarried Burt Morss of Decorah, and the family moved to Decorah. Van Butler graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1932. He married Pearl L. Carlson March 25, 1936 in Caledonia, Minn. To this union four children were born: Eleanor, Gertrude, Carol and Steven. He worked for the State Conservation Commission before and after his service in the Navy. He served in the Navy from May 24, 1944 to Nov. 25, 1945 with the rank of Fireman First Class. He then owned and operated Van's Sportsmen's Rendezvous for 45 years. Van Butler had a radio program on KDEC, closing every program with "'Till next time ... good hunting and fishing." He wrote a weekly article for the Decorah Journal under the name "The Old Timer" for many years. Van Butler was a member of the Decorah Fire Department for 30 years, the VFW and the American Legion, the Mason's, the Elk's Lodge, and the Fox & Coon Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Van Orr Mason Butler was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pearl (Carlson) on Oct. 9, 1988, and his daughter, Eleanor Harkness on July 6, 2001
