John was the firstborn of Blanche Claire White and Varick John Doig Sr. on Nov. 10, 1930, in Townsend. He joined the U.S. Navy in November 1947 and served until November 1951. After an honorable discharge he joined the Montana National Guard. He was married to Caryl Benetta Thronson at St. John's Lutheran Church on Aug. 28, 1952. He started working for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company in February 1952 and retired 40 years to the day from U.S. West as an auditor. John was preceded in death by his father, Varick, and wife, Caryl. He is survived by his mother, Blanche Doig; sister, Patricia Apland; brother, Marvin (Julie) Doig; his children, Robert (Mariellen) of Brick, N.J.; Michael (Karen) of East Helena; Linda (Cornelius) Valkenburg of Billings; Barbara (Elden) Sheridan of Helena; Bonni Kirby of Helena; special companion of 14 years, Rose Marie Lindstrom (Rosie); 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. John and Caryl were married for 39 years before Caryl passed away in 1992. John and Caryl had five children: Robert Eugene, born in July 1953; Michael Dennis, born in June 1954; Linda Caryl, born in September 1955; Barbara Marie, born in March 1958; and Bonni Jon, born in March 1966. John enjoyed traveling with his family, coaching baseball, fishing and camping. After his retirement he enjoyed volunteer work with the Montana Talking Books Library. The U.S. Navy and the telephone company were paramount in his life, and he reminisced frequently about the impact it made in his life. John's special companion, Rosie, was a shining light in his life after Caryl's passing. He always lived his life in the manner he was raised - the only help for a man is at the end of his arm.
