Description	:	Varrell Leroy Wakefield, 91, of 163 Whipple Road, Kittery, Maine, died peacefully in York on Dec. 26, 2008. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing. He was born Oct. 23, 1917, in East Bethel, Vt., the son of George and Ethel (Gerry) Wakefield. Read More	Varrell Leroy Wakefield, 91, of 163 Whipple Road, Kittery, Maine, died peacefully in York on Dec. 26, 2008. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing. He was born Oct. 23, 1917, in East Bethel, Vt., the son of George and Ethel (Gerry) Wakefield. Raised on the family farm in West Brookfield, Vt., he received his elementary education in a one-room schoolhouse. While attending Randolph High School in Randolph, Vt., he served as president of the Wide Awake School Club in West Brookfield, and Master of the Snowsville Grange # 93 in East Braintree. He graduated from high school in 1936 and worked for the Brookfield Highway Department. During this time he also worked on his father's and uncle's farms. In 1940, he was accepted as an Apprentice Machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. He entered the U. S. Navy in 1945 and served aboard the USS Remus, ARL-40 as a Machinist Mate - Shop, 3rd class. Varrell was honorably discharged May 20, 1946, and received the World War II Victory and American Theatre Medals. Upon discharge he returned to reside in Kittery where he resumed his career at the shipyard and raised a family. He retired from the shipyard as a Foreman Machinist in 1973. During his retirement he enjoyed part-time employment with Robbins Auto Parts and Ben's Auto Body. Varrell was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Kittery. He and his wife traveled extensively in their retirement throughout the lower 48 states, Alaska, most Canadian Provinces and the Yukon Territory. Varrell was a member of the Good Sam's RV Club and served as Assistant State Director for six years. Survivors include: his wife of 66 years, Mary (Gaiko) Wakefield; his son James Wakefield and wife Sandra of York, Maine.; daughter Elaine Yandow and husband Raymond of Leesburg, Fla.; five grandchildren, James Wakefield Jr. and wife Jennifer of South Berwick, Maine, Michael Wakefield and wife Rachel of South Berwick, Maine, Michelle Ziter and husband Jason of Essex Jct., Vt., Charlene Hoyt and husband Scott of Kittery, Maine, and Timothy Gerry of Williston, Vt. He also has: two step-grandchildren, Timothy Yandow of Essex Jct., Vt., and Bobbie Jo Meigs and husband Jody of Homosassa, Fla.; eight great-grandchildren, seven step great-grandchildren and one step great-great-grandchild; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Varrell was pre-deceased by his brother, Avon, and his stepmother Stella (Gildemeister) Wakefield. Funeral arrangements are being made through the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 60 Government Street, Kittery, Maine. Family flowers only, donations may be made in his memory to St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
