He was born on Jan. 14, 1922 in Laconia, and attended Laconia Schools; the Governor's Academy and attended the University of NH before enlisting in the service for World War II. During the war he served as a photographic technician in the Army Air Force squadron 493rd Air Service group from 1943-45, receiving many medals for his service. He served on the boards of the Laconia and Nashua YMCA, the Hollis Conservation Commission and Hollis Historical Society. He was very active in the Congregational Church of Hollis and United Church of Christ. He loved to participate in outdoor activities, hiking the White Mountains, skiing, snowshoeing, and sailing. He enjoyed many camping trips with family friends over the years with many fond memories of Sanibel Island, Florida and Mayo Farms on beautiful Lake Waukewan in Center Harbor. His spirit of optimism in the face of adversity is one of his most enduring gifts left behind for family and friends, along with warm memories of his wonderful smile and infectious good humor. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy (Haynes) Pitman, of Hollis; a brother, Donald Pitman of Strafford, Conn.; five children, Gregg Pitman of Northwood; Judy Duda of Holderness; Betsy Regan of Goffstown; Martha Lunsky of Frisco, Colo.; and Rodney Pitman of Franklin; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Services: No calling hours will be held. A family memorial will be held at Lake Waukewan, and a public celebration of his life will be held on Oct. 22, 2011, at 1 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Hollis, United Church of Christ, 3 Monument Square, Hollis, NH
