Vaughn Gail Evans, 72, passed away Friday, July 9, 2004, from a sudden illness, at a Kansas City, MO, hospital. He was born on August 1, 1931, at Valley Falls, KS, the son of Travis J. and Mildred Hurst Evans. He spent his childhood in Topeka, KS, before moving to the Kansas City area. He graduated from William Chrisman High School, Independence, MO. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War and was decorated for flying on secret missions. The highlight of his service was escorting Marilyn Monroe during a USO tour. Upon returning to Kansas City, he attended the Kansas City Art Institute. Vaughn started his career at Hallmark Cards, worked at a printing business, and later owned Image Plus, an advertising specialties company. He escorted two U.S. Presidents at Veterans of Foreign Wars Conventions and was responsible for the Republican Convention Booklet of 1976, where he collected letters from all dignitaries. Several of his photographs are at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. Survivors include two sons, Christopher Evans and Michael Evans, his wife, Lisa Evans, and their son, Shane Evans, all of Kansas City, MO; his former wife, Millicent [Gene Levy *Nov. 27, 1936 Kansas City, MO] Evans, Boca Raton, FL; three stepdaughters, Jill Gordon, Chicago, IL, Jane Gordon, New York City, NY, and Amy Deutch and family of Miami, FL; five sisters, Gladys McPherson, Virginia Wolfe, Lois Thompson, Doris Myers, all of Topeka, and Betty Meeks, Oak Park, MO; and one brother, Billy Evans of Indianapolis, IN. Burial was Monday at Valley Falls Cemetery, Valley Falls, KS. Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W. 47th St., Kansas City, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Association of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 6, Valley Falls, KS 66088.
