Vaughn L. Knox, 53, was found dead in his bed at 34 Elm St. Monday evening by two co-workers who had returned after failing to rouse him for work earlier in the day. A chair in an adjoining room was found burned to the springs. Dr. Anthony Betts, medical examiner, of Waterville, said he suspects cause of death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning, although final determination must come from results of a blood test. Dr. Betts said the man had been dead for 24 to 48 hours. Assistant County Attorney Tom Hyde of Fairfield was also at the scene Monday, but he could not be reached Tuesday evening. Police said they smelled traces of smoke as they entered the apartment, Trooper Lynch said a pair of trousers was found with a two-inch burnhole. Chief Gould said the man was found undressed in his bed. Dr. Betts explained that death due to a fire can be caused either by lack of oxygen, or inhalation of the carbon monoxide produced. Also at the scene Monday were Fairfield Police Officers Wayne MacArthur and Michael Tully; and Deputy Sheriff Francis Henderson. State Fire Inspector Charles Hopper, Augusta, expressed concern Tuesday at his office's lack of information. He said it is a matter of general policy that the state fire marshal's office be notified immediately whenever fire is a related cause of death. He said it helps the investigating fire inspector "tremendously" if the body is left in its original position until he arrives. Hopper cited a 1969 clarification law, and several indepartmental memos appointing his department as the official investigative agency in such fires, representative agency in such fires,representative of the state Attorney General's office. Fairfield Fire Chief Benjamin Leighton could not be reached for comment Tuesday. The log kept by his department, however, recorded no notification of the Monday incident. Fairfield Police Chief Fred Gould said Tuesday that his department did not call the fire department "to his Knowledge" because "when we were there, there was no fire." State Trooper Timothy Lynch said he did not call the fire department because it was not his position, and he assumed the department had already, or would soon be called. Knox was born in Fairfield, June 29, 1921, son of William and Olive Bartley Knox. He had been employed at Keyes Fibre Co. Waterville, and Warren Brothers Co. in Benton. He is survived by two sons, Jeffrey and William, both of Benton; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Rita) White, Waterville and Brenda Knox, Fairfield; one brother, William of Fairfield Center and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Fairfield. David Wrigley, pastor of Advent Christian Church in Waterville, officiating. Bearers were George Higgins, John Short, Norman Dickinson, Roger Dickinson, Forest Goodwin and Clifton Gray. Burial was in the Friends Cemetery in North Fairfield.
