Description	:	Velda Mae Johnson was born on May 16, 1926, on a farm south of Colome, SD, to Patrick & Edna (Tarr) Johnson. Her father passed away when she was 8 years old. The family then moved to Gregory. In 1935 the family was baptized and became members of the United Methodist Church in Gregory. She attended rural schools south of Gregory and south of Colome. She finished school in Gregory and graduated in 1944. While in high school, she cleaned houses and did babysitting. She also worked for Swift & Company picking chickens. Following graduation, she attended summer school at... Read More	Velda Mae Johnson was born on May 16, 1926, on a farm south of Colome, SD, to Patrick & Edna (Tarr) Johnson. Her father passed away when she was 8 years old. The family then moved to Gregory. In 1935 the family was baptized and became members of the United Methodist Church in Gregory. She attended rural schools south of Gregory and south of Colome. She finished school in Gregory and graduated in 1944. While in high school, she cleaned houses and did babysitting. She also worked for Swift & Company picking chickens. Following graduation, she attended summer school at Yankton College to receive her 2-year teaching certificate. In September 1944 she married Stanley "Skyk" Vosika. To this union two children were born, Sandra Kay and Craig. Velda and Skyk purchased a house in Gregory and Stanley farmed with his father. In 1950 they purchased their farm southeast of Gregory and were in the dairy business and farming. Stanley passed away in 1978. Velda stayed on the farm until 2000 when she bought a house in Gregory and moved to town. In 2008 she moved into an apartment in Gregory. Velda is survived by: 2 children, Sandy (Weary) Young of Burke, SD, and Craig (Roberta) Vosika of Gregory, SD; 4 grandchildren, Brenda Young of Omaha, NE, Brian (Dodi) Young of Madison, SD, Brett (Betsy) Young of Sheldon, IA, and Breana (Jack) Kennedy of Mitchell, SD; 1 step-grandson, Harlyne Claussen of Gillette, WY; 9 great-grandchildren, Tyler (Karisa) Polzen, Jenna Polzen, Drake Young, Taylor Bird, Jackson Young, Nicholas Young, Paige Young, Ashlyn Young, & Isaiah Young; 1 sister, Pat Whiting; 2 brothers-in-law; 3 sisters-in-law; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Skyk Vosika; 1 sister, Betty Redder; 2 brothers, Kenneth Johnson and Dwight Johnson; 1 grandson, Brent Young; 1 step-granddaughter, Tamie Lacey; 3 brothers-in-law; and 3 sisters-in-law.
