Read More	Velda Marie Fitzgerald, age 97, of Boone and the Eastern Star Masonic Home, died June 15, 2015, at the Home. Velda Marie Fitzgerald was born in Pocahontas on July 21, 1917, the daughter of Max and Maude (Murphy) Stumpf. She grew up on a farm and attended country school through the 8th grade. She graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Pocahontas and received a teaching certificate from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake in 1943. Following graduation, Velda was an elementary school teacher for several years in Wall Lake, Lake View, and Lake City. Later, she worked in the Pocahontas County auditor's office and later became the deputy auditor. She worked there until 1963, when she moved to Boone. On December 29, 1962, she married Maurice James Fitzgerald in Pocahontas, Iowa. After she and Maurice were married, Velda did volunteer work at the Boone County Hospital and Mamie Eisenhower Birthplace, where she was a charter member. Velda was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart and the Altar Society where she held many offices. She served at funeral dinners and recited the Rosary at funeral wakes for many years. Velda was a member of the Catholic Women's Study Club, Church Women United, where she was president, the Boone Women's Club, where she was active in its chorus and held several offices, and the Catholic Daughters of America in Pocahontas. Both Maurice and Velda were active in the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life, as they were both cancer survivors. The couple also enjoyed volunteering at Sacred Heart Church and School. Maurice and Velda provided the money to construct the accessibility ramp and sound system at their church. In later years, Velda assisted Maurice as a clerk in his business, Maurice Fitzgerald's Auction Company. Velda loved to travel. She and Maurice toured Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Rome, Alaska, Mexico, and Hawaii. She and Maurice enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and dancing. Although they had no children, Velda and Maurice enjoyed their many nieces, nephews, and their children. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and nieces and nephews, Bobby Fitzgerald, Julie Fitzgerald, Rev. Timothy Fitzgerald, Luann Anderson, and Shannon Shearer. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Mike Fitzgerald and wife Marge of Ames, Pat Fitzgerald and wife Brenda of Boone, Mary Jo Tungesvik and husband Loren of Radcliffe, and Geralyn McVeigh and husband Jim of Spring Hill, Tennessee; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.
