She graduated from York High School in 1946 and attended cosmetology school in Lincoln, NE. After receiving her license, she worked for several years as a beautician in York. She married Donald McClatchey on March 27, 1954 and together they raised two daughters. Later she worked part-time in the mailing room of the York News Times alongside her husband who was the circulation manager there for many years. Velda found her true calling as a doting grandmother. She enjoyed baking cookies for her grandchildren, attending their activities, and spoiling them as much as possible. In her later years she enjoyed the company of friends and staff at the Hearthstone. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of York. Velda is survived by her daughters; Susan (James) Watt of Gothenburg, NE and Shelley Stamm of Arvada, CO, grandchildren; Caroline (Tom) Scott of Gothenburg, NE, Andrew Watt of San Francisco, CA, Jenna Watt of Omaha, NE, Martha (Jake) Thurston of Grand Junction, CO and Kelsey Stamm of Fort Collins, CO and great grandchildren; Jonathan and Abigail Scott of Gothenburg, NE. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, son-in-law, David Stamm, and sister Verla Hirschfeld.
