Description	:	Veleta "Mildred" Slavin, 82, of Pittsburg, Kansas died at 4:15 p.m. on Tues. Oct. 27, 1998 at the Sunset Manor Health Care Center. She had been in ill health three months and had resided at Sunset Manor since September. She was born on June 6, 1916 in McCune, Ks. the daughter of Leonard Page and Mabel (Shaw) Wamsley. Read More	Veleta "Mildred" Slavin, 82, of Pittsburg, Kansas died at 4:15 p.m. on Tues. Oct. 27, 1998 at the Sunset Manor Health Care Center. She had been in ill health three months and had resided at Sunset Manor since September. She was born on June 6, 1916 in McCune, Ks. the daughter of Leonard Page and Mabel (Shaw) Wamsley. She attended and graduated from Girard High School in 1933. Mildred married John F. Slavin on Jan. 13, 1942. He preceded her in death on April 2, 1985. She was employed for many years as a secretary. She worked four years for the County Engineer in Girard. During WW II, she worked at the Sunflower Ordnance Works at DeSoto while John was in the service. At the end of the war, they returned to Pittsburg, Ks. where she worked for several prominent attorneys. She worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons, Ks. during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, retiring in 1976. Mildred was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, the St. Paul's group of widows and widowers; St. Mary's Altar Society, the Southeast Kansas Humane Society, the American Association of Retired Persons; the Mt. Carmel Medical Center's Auxiliary and was a past president of the Pittsburg Post 1158 Auxiliary. She had served five years as a volunteer memorial chairman for the AMerican Cancer Society. Survivors include a sister, Fern McMahan of Grove, Ok. and a cousin, Raeme Lee Mullen of Erie who helped provide for her care. An infant brother preceded her in death. A graveside service was held at the St. Mary's Cemetery with Rev. Thomas Stroot officiating. Rosary was held at the Brenner Mortuary Chapel in Pittsburg.
