Daughter of Fred Almon Sipes and Olive Helen Edwards OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, August 30, 2001 VELMA ACKLEY Velma Cletas Ackley was born Feb. 4, 1915 in Russell, Iowa. She was the daughter of Fred and Olive Edwards Sipes. Velma passed away at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab center on Aug. 22, 2001. Velma attended Russell schools, graduating as Salutorian in the class of 1934. She studied a Normal Training Course and received a teacher's certificate for the State of Iowa. Velma served on several committees during high school and was secretary-treasurer of the Junior Class. She belonged to the Glee Club and Camp Fire Girls. The Sipes family moved to Unionville, Mo. in 1936 where she lived until 1979. Velma worked in a poultry house, then established a greeting card business that she worked at for 17 years. Velma married Hazen Ackley. He was a taxi driver and she accompanied him on many trips. She became a member of the First Christian Church of Unionville in 1966. Velma had many hobbies; among them were swimming, boating, gardening, bicycling and entering contests where she had won over 100 prizes. She also loved birds and animals and wrote poetry. After her husband passed away in 1979, Velma moved to Seymour, then to Allerton, Iowa and Chariton before entering the care center in Chariton. Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a nephew in infancy, Freddie Clark of Creston; a niece, Sherry Ann Sipes Pratt of Lima, Ohio; two sisters, Izola (Mrs. Charles) Clark of Creston and Marie (Mrs. Ray) Lance of Lima, Ohio; and three brothers, Clyde Sipes of Marshalltown, Iowa; Ray Sipes of Lima, Ohio; and Archie Sipes of Chariton. Survivors include a sister, Marjorie and her husband R. V. Hower of Lima, Ohio; four nieces, Sharon (Mrs. James) Crouse of Winter Haven, Fla.; Judy (Mrs. Darrell Besco) of Chariton; Barbara Perkins of Broomfield, Colo.; and Shirley (Mrs. Dennis) Smith of Haines City, Fla.; three nephews, Freddie and Ronald Sipes of Lima, Ohio and John Sipes of Ames, Iowa; and a special friend, Mary Warnick. Graveside services were held Friday, Aug. 14, 2001 at the Confidence Cemetery with Rev. Paul Olson officiating. Casket bearers were Dr. John Harmon, Larry Reece, Larry Brown, Steve Brown, Loyd Cawthorn and Glen Tyler.
