Velma was born on June 13, 1922, in Lynch, Nebraska, to Casper and Mary Ann (Bessmer) Haselhorst. Velma grew up in Lynch and graduated from Lynch High School. Velma was born on June 13, 1922, in Lynch, Nebraska, to Casper and Mary Ann (Bessmer) Haselhorst. Velma grew up in Lynch and graduated from Lynch High School. After graduating, she attended Wayne State College and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. Velma married Lorie D. Micanek on December 27, 1945, in Lynch, at the Assumption BVM Catholic Church. They lived in Lynch for many years until retiring in O’Neill. Velma was a teacher for 15 years and a lifelong homemaker. She and Lorie were very active in the church. She was an officer in the Altar Rosary Society for many years, a lifelong member of the Catholic Daughters, and taught CCD for many years. Velma is survived by: her sisters and brother, Vera Moody, Delbert Haselhorst and wife Kay, Joyce Audiss and Bob Vogltance, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Lorie D. Micanek; her parents, Casper and Mary Ann Haselhorst; sisters, Meldine Streit and husband Edward, Dolores Rossmeier and husband Herb, Marjorie Vonasek and husband Henry, and Arlene Havranek and husband Ray; one brother, Melvin Haselhorst and wife Dorothy; and brothers-in-law, Berl Moody and Dale W. Audiss. Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, December 12, 2016, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill, with burial in the O’Neill Calvary Cemetery.
