Description	:	Velma Fern Ritz, 94, died on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Edgewood Vista in Grand Island. Graveside services will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Douglas Grove Cemetery, west of Comstock, NE. Dan Naranjo will be officiating. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Velma was born on October 1, 1919 in Comstock, NE, the daughter of Hazel (Hoffman) and Ernie Saunders. Velma attended school in Comstock and Arcadia and graduated in 1936 from Arcadia High School. She attended Kearney College and received a Normal Training Certificate for teaching and taught in rural schools for several years. Velma and Louis Ritz were married on March 11, 1943 in Broken Bow. Three children were born; Kay, Chuck and Cindy. After her marriage to Louis they farmed in the Arcadia area and later moved into Arcadia where they had their own business. In 1954 they purchased a farm south of Comstock. Velma enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren events, flowers and gardening always canning a lot of produce. Favorite pastimes included making afghans and cross stitching for family and friends and playing pitch. She always had a good time at the Comstock Den visiting with friends. Louis died September 2, 1984. In 1990 Velma sold the farm and moved into Comstock. There she had a big garden and yard which brought her a lot of pleasure. She had been a member of the Comstock Legion Auxiliary since 1972. In 2010 she moved to Edgewood Vista in Grand Island where she spent the remainder of her life. The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care given to her while living there. Velma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Virginia Elliot and Lydia Owens. Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Kay (Dean) Schuchman, and Cindy (John) Ogle of Grand Island; a son, Louis C. (Cynthia) Ritz of Comstock; grandsons, Colby and Justin Ritz of Comstock; a niece, Karen Elliott of Sidney; Nephews Robert Owens of O'Neill and Michael Owens of Aurora.
