At Velma's wish, she was cremated. A Memorial service will be held at a later date at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Velma was born Feb. 5, 1926, in Hay Springs to Harold and Margaret Jeffryes. She was one of four daughters. They moved to Alliance in 1928 and lived there through her Freshman year in High School. In the spring of 1940, the Jeffryes' family moved from Alliance to Gering for her father's work at Union Pacific Railroad. They lived on 10th Street just north of the old Scottsbluff County Court House. It was a favorite place of the extended Jeffryes family to watch many Oregon Trail Day parades. Velma married James A. Reed on Easter Sunday, March 28, 1948 in Gering. Velma was a homemaker who was devoted to raising her two sons. Her hobbies included her love for cooking, genealogy and creating those special Barbie Doll Birthday cakes. Velma's servant spirit will be missed by all her family and friends. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Gering. A Memorial has been set up for Boy Scout Troop 56 of Dubois, Wyoming. Gifts payable to Boy Scout Troop 56 may be mailed to Tom Reed, PO Box 1296, Dubois, WY 82513. Survivors include her sons, Gary (Janis) Reed of Flower Mound, Texas and Thomas (Tammy) Reed of Dubois, Wyo.; granddaughter, Amy (Henry) Paoli of El Paso, Texas; grandsons, Timothy Reed of Denver and James Reed of Flower Mound, Texas; and great-granddaughters, Ava and Arianna Paoli. Preceding Velma in death were her parents, Harold and Margaret Jeffryes; husband, James A. Reed; sisters, Mary Genevieve Landrigan of Bridgeport, Lucille Provencher of Danielson, Conn. and Betty Shubert of Gering. The Star-Herald November 8, 2012
