VELMA AYERS MEYER Velma Ayers Meyer, the daughter of Jacob and Rosa Kaub Ayers, was born at Sabetha on December 16, 1905, one of five children born to this family. She grew up in the Sabetha area and graduated from Sabetha High School. She became a schoolteacher and taught in rural schools for a time. Velma lived with her parents on the family farm and took an active part in the operation of the farm. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Sabetha, taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was a member of the Business Professional Women's Club of Sabetha and the Albany Historical Society. She was united in marriage to Solomon Meyer. They lived at Seneca and owned and operated the Log Cabin Cafe and gas station for many years. Solly died December 9, 1963. Velma moved back to the family farm northwest of Sabetha, managing the farm until her health began to fail. She moved into the Fountain Villa Apartments when they were constructed, lived there for a time and returned to the farm for a short time. She then returned to the apartment, later going into the nursing home where she died March 7. Preceding her in death were her parents, Rosa in 1946 and Jacob in 1961, an infant brother, Paul Emerson Ayers on January 20, 1905 as well as her husband Solly in 1963 and a brother Ferle Ayers of Kansas City in 1986. Surviving her are two sisters, Lucille (Mrs. Joe) Jones of Davenport, IA and Helena Boyer of Silver Springs, MD, and a brother, Virgil Ayers of Los Angeles, CA. Services were held at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel March 9, 1988 with Rev. Bert Buurman of the First United Methodist Church officiating. The interment was made in the Albany Cemetery north of Sabetha.
