Lauber of Geneva, Neb., passed away at the Fillmore county hospital in Geneva, December 27, 1971, at the age of 75 years, 1 month and 30 days. She had been residing at Heritage Home of Geneva for the past two and one-half years. She entered the Fillmore County hospital a week before her death. Velma Lauber was born October 28, 1896, in Saline county on a farm near Dorchester to George W. and Jennie Lauber. While Velma was small, the family moved to Fillmore county to a farm near Fairmont and later to a farm near Geneva. Velma attended country school in Fillmore county and upon graduation from high school in Geneva, she attended Peru State Teachers College. She graduated in 1920. The next 15 years were spent teaching school, two years in Geneva, 10 years in Arapahoe and three years in rural schools. She was a faithful member of the Rebekah lodge and a past noble grand. She was a past president of the Geneva Township club and held several offices in the Geneva Woman’s club. From 1936 through 1961 she was secretary-treasurer of the Lauber Seed Company. She was associated with the company from its beginning in York, Neb., until she retired in 1962. Along with these duties she also handled the accounting for the Lauber Motor Company and the Lauber Seed Farms. Among her survivors are her sister, Mrs. Elmer (Ruth) Powers, of La Canada, Cal., nephews, Richard Powers of LaCanada, Cal., Claiton and Wendell Lauber of Geneva, and eight grandnieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her brother, the late H. W. Lauber of Geneva. Funeral services were held at the United Methodist church of Geneva at 2 p. m. Thursday, December 30, with Rev. John E. Stayton officiating. “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In The Garden” were played by the organist, Mrs. Melvin Olson. Pallbearers were John C. Gewacke, Jerry D. Lauber, Martin E. Lauber, Hollis B. Miller, Floyd Smith and Francis Walker. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal 6 January 1972 page 4.
