Description	:	On April 21, 1921 in Newdale, Idaho, Tavnor and Laura Bell Barger gave birth to twin baby girls, Velma and Verna. Three years later, the ten-member family moved to Wapato, and Velma began her 80 year long journey as a "Valley Girl." Read More	On April 21, 1921 in Newdale, Idaho, Tavnor and Laura Bell Barger gave birth to twin baby girls, Velma and Verna. Three years later, the ten-member family moved to Wapato, and Velma began her 80 year long journey as a "Valley Girl." She attended the Wapato School, was a member of the Wapato Assembly of God Church, went to church picnics, skated with her friends, and taught herself how to play the piano. She had a natural ear for music and eventually became a very talented musician, which included a glorious singing voice. But as a child growing up in the Valley during the Great Depression, she witnessed more bad times than good times. Then at 18 years old, the beautiful young girl met a handsome young CCC boy from Georgia. It was love at first sight. Less than two months later, Velma and Ed Hill were married in her parents' Wapato home, both having now found the true happiness they had been searching for. Within a couple of years they started their family, two boys and a girl. Velma loved her new role as housewife and mother of three, working side by side with Ed to help provide for her family. She sold Avon to become one of their top representatives, did waitress and cannery work, and became an excellent seamstress and cook. She learned how to knit and crochet and upholster furniture, all the while continuing to develop her first love . . . her music. Again, alongside her husband, Velma worked in the Wapato First Baptist Church, where she was the church pianist for many years. It was truly a joy for all who had the privilege to hear her play the piano and sing. Her dedication to and love for her church and music was an inspiration that will never be forgotten. As Velma and Ed's 65 year marriage proceeded, they grew together . . . laughing and crying, struggling and succeeding, but always completely committed to each other and their family. She was a very strong, courageous woman, living with considerable pain and limitations in her later years. After many difficulties, Velma quietly and peacefully left us on January 1, 2005, to be with her Lord and Saviour, who has promised no more pain. Velma is survived by her devoted husband, Edwin Hill and their three children, Ron Hill of Wapato, Carole Yager of Woodinville, Edwin Hill, Jr. of Yakima, with twelve grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and her brother, Loren Barger of Yakima.
