Hawker, 47, former Manchester resident and for the past several years a resident of Alpha, passed away Saturday evening at Allen Memorial hospital in Waterloo following an illness of about a year's duration. Funeral services for Mrs. Hawkins were scheduled from the First Lutheran Church, Manchester at 1:30 p.m. today (Tuesday) with the Rev. R. F. Gronewold officiating. Burial will be made in the Ryan Lutheran cemetery. The Shelly funeral home was in charge of arrangement. Velva Jane Hugh, daughter of Lester and Emily Corll Hugh, was born May 21, 1915, on the parental farm near Hopkinton. She started her schooling in the rural school of the Hopkinton area and then came at an early age with her parents to Milo township south of Manchester, where she completed her education in the rural schools of Milo township. She later attended the Manchester high school. She was united in marriage with George T. Hawker on April 1, 1933, at Manchester and following their marriage they farmed in the Ryan community for a time and then moved to Ryan. They lived at Ryan for several years, then moved to Earlville for several years, then to Manchester. Mrs. Hawker was a member of the Lutheran church since marriage, first at Ryan, later at Earlville, and then the First Lutheran church at Manchester while living here. Mrs. Hawker is survived by her husband, George T. Hawker of Alpha; one daughter, Mrs. LaVerne (Velva Joan) Gibbs of New Hampton; two grandsons and two granddaughters; one foster daughter, Mrs. Ernest (Catherine) Carrol, of Des Moines; her mother, Mrs. Emily Clemons of Sacramento, CA, and one brother, Walter B. Hugh of Las Vegas, NV. She was preceded in death by one son, George Richard; her father, a sister, Laura Atwood and her stepfather.
