Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, with Father Bill Reynolds officiating. The daughter of Blatchley Wayne (May 18, 1888-Oct 1978)and Edna (Ball) Stitt (Nov 11, 1891-Aug 1985), she was born on Sept. 24, 1913, in Coats, Kan. On Sept. 7, 1939, she married Joseph "Joe" F. Becker in Clermont. She grew up in Kansas and lived in Iowa City and Grinnell before moving to Newton in 1958. She graduated from high school in 1931 in Liberal, Kan. She then attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan., from 1932 to 1934 and then the University of Iowa School of Nursing in Iowa City from 1934 to 1937. Velva was a registered nurse and had worked as a school nurse for the Newton Community School District for 20 years, retiring in 1980. She was a 50-year member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Newton School Board, Willowbrook Adult Daycare Center Board, state coordinator for AARP Health Advocacy Network, secretary and treasurer for the State of Iowa Nurses' Association, Jasper County Retired School Personnel, Progress Industries Board, Crossroads Area Agency on Aging, Jasper County Public Health Nursing and Questers. She is survived by one son, Brian Becker of Newton; two daughters, Barb Becker (and Kate Houston) of Minneapolis, Minn., and Susan Becker of Newton; one granddaughter, Brook (Jarrett) Smith of Spencer; three great-grandchildren, Tristen, Brayden and Addisyn Smith of Spencer; and one sister, Susie Van Dine of Dubuque. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Joe in 2000, two brothers, Dr. Paul Stitt (Fort Dodge, IA) and Dr. Ronald Stitt (Shawnee, KS); and a sister, Gladys Bredfeldt (Traer, IA).
