Women carried clay for plaster and even rocks while the men built thick walls to shut out the bitter cold of winter and the burning summer sun. With a passion for cleanliness, they whitewashed them inside and out with lime from the kiln whose ruins may still be seen on the banks of the creek. Trees must be split into beams for ceiling and roof. The Vaneks never forgot that they killed a bear right where the first house was afterward built. This house had two big rooms, and when Mrs. Vanek's parents, Mike and Eva Verkoch came, one room was given up to them and a kitchen built on .. Wenzel Vanek was a cobbler. The terrible depression, which began with The Panic of 1857, hit Iowa, too. There was no money in the country but the virgin prairies of Iowa yielded abundant food. No clearing of forests here, the plow could be unloaded from the wagon and put in the ground to turn the first furrow at once. But such things as salt, soda, tea, coffee, and sugar must be bought, and nails for the shingles. Flour and meal were ground from their own wheat and corn, though it took perhaps three days to go to the distant mill with plodding oxen. Wenzel Vanek would start out on Monday morning with his cobbler's tools in a sack on his back and spend the week going from farm to farm, mending or making shoes, and living with the farmers. On Saturday night, he would return, loaded with meal, flour, meat and vegetables but with not one cent of cash ..."
